African-Americans Fears
by Marin Dees, Jr.,
Warwick Township Democratic Committee District Leader, Lancaster
County, PA
The facts of
Barack Obama's birth make him a brother or cousin to all Americans.
That is who he is. However, since New Hampshire, it seems a
metamorphosis has occurred; commentators and others, have changed the
discussion from him being an unique American vying for the presidency
to a discussion about race. The facts of his birth have been
disregarded. These little “slights” from the truth have divided us in
the past, and continue to divide us as Americans. Read

William Bostic...These
are strong and substantive points made by Martin Dees. Moving forward,
Senator Barack Obama is indeed a strong and viable candidate. Among
other positive traits, Senator Obama demonstrates a high degree of
credibility. I am impressed.

Why
Women Don't Run for Office and What Happens When They Do: Gender,
Campaigns, and the 2008 Elections
President
Nancy Vickers and the Brown Club of Philadelphia invite you to a
lecture by Jennifer Lawless entitled "Why Women Don't Run for Office
and What Happens When They Do: Gender, Campaigns, and the 2008
Elections" on Sunday, February 10 at 2:00 p.m.
The lecture will be
held at the Thomas Great Hall at Bryn Mawr College in Bryn Mawr, PA.
Women, even in the
highest tiers of professional accomplishment, are substantially less
likely than men to demonstrate ambition to seek elected office. Women
are less likely than men to be recruited to run for office. They are
less likely than men to think they are "qualified" to run for office.
And they are less likely than men to express a willingness to run for
office in the future.
This gender gap in
political ambition persists across generations. Despite cultural
evolution and society's changing attitudes toward women in politics,
running for public office remains a much less attractive and feasible
endeavor for women than men. Based on the research she conducted
for her book, It Takes A Candidate: Why Women Don't Run for Office,
and her own experiences seeking the 2006 Democratic nomination to the
U.S. House of Representatives in Rhode Island's second congressional
district, Jennifer Lawless will discuss the barriers women face when
running for office and the gender dynamics of the campaign trail.
Lancaster Peace Film Festival
Every evening the of Jan.
30 - Feb. 2 church youth groups in Lancaster will host films that deal
with issues of war and peace. The Peace Film Festival is part of an
initiative called “Lancaster Supports Iraq Veterans Against the War.”
This initiative is sponsored by the Lancaster Interchurch Peace
Witness, the Lancaster Coalition for Peace & Justice, the Lancaster
Chapter of Students for a Democratic Society, and the participating
church youth groups.
Iraq Veterans Against the
War (IVAW) is a very important organization that is perhaps better
positioned than anyone to help pressure an end the war in Iraq. IVAW
is crossing a critical threshold in building its capacity to organize
dissent within the military. Donations will be collected at the event
for IVAW, and a short presentation and discussion about the
organization will follow each film. Snacks will be provided.

Psychological Gang Bang
of Hillary Is Proof We Need a Woman President
by Marcia
Pappas, President, NOW New York State
We've
all witnessed scenarios where, on the playground little girls
are being taunted by little boys while both girls and boys stand idle,
afraid to speak up or even cheering. Or, in the workplace males
tease young and older female co-workers; make obscene gestures,
inappropriate comments, laughing and expecting (often correctly) that
everyone will join in. Then there was that movie where Jodie Foster
portrayed the true story of woman who was ganged raped in a bar while
others looked on and encouraged the realization. Still others
pretended the rape didn't happen. In short, gang raping of women is
commonplace in our culture both physically and metaphorically.

A
Surge
of More Lies
by
Congressman Robert Wexler
A new troubling myth
has taken hold in Washington and it is critical that the record is set
straight. According to the mainstream media, Republicans, and
unfortunately even some Democrats, the President's surge in Iraq has
been a resounding success. In fact, nothing could be further from the
truth.
This assertion is
disingenuous, factually incorrect, and negatively impacts America's
national security. The Surge had a clear and defined objective - to
create stability and security - enabling the Iraqi government to enact
lasting political solutions and foster genuine reconciliation and
cooperation between Sunnis, Shias, and Kurds.

Don't Blame the Pollsters
by
Jerry Policoff, 01/08/2008
Most of the
polls had Obama widening the lead during the last three days, and
Zogby reported that late deciders were going virtually 100% for Obama
and Edwards, but MSNBC reports that the exit polls show Obama and
Clinton splitting the late deciders 38%/38%.
The big problem in
my opinion is that the pollsters continue to insist that they can
predict who the “likely voters” are, and it is that smaller sub-sample
that they project from, even though virtually every pollster has a
totally different formula for determining just who those likely voters
are. Gallup, which is supposed to have one of the most
“sophisticated” and complex formulas (one that tends to exclude
first-time voters) got it more wrong than almost anybody.

Change Is About Policies Not Speeches or Symbolism
by Stephen Crockett, co-host of
Democratic Talk Radio
Edwards has better
policies for substantive change than either Clinton or Obama.
Symbolism and speeches is not enough. While I find Obama inspiring
especially when giving speeches, he has the worse plan of the top
three contenders on healthcare and Edwards has the best. Read
